Habitat: Estuarine forested wetland and tidal marsh
Species Benefiting From Restoration: orchids, shrimp, blue crab, nodding nixie
Acreage Restored: 63 acres of wetlands
History: Because of
past agricultural use of land, the nature trail area has
suffered from hydrological alterations, invasive species,
and a heavy fuel load.
Project Area:
- 63 acres total within Weeks Bay NERR (a
GEMS site)
- 25 acres at NE boundary of trail (near visitors center) called Control I is in better condition than nature trail area
- 20 acres at SW boundary of trail called Control II is in similar condition to nature trail area
Project Goals:
- restore habitats altered by human activities leading
to decreased habitat diversity within reserve and nearby
wetlands and uplands
- increase species diversity in wetland, marsh, aquatic habitat
- create accessible restoration demonstration around Nature Trail, enabling public participation and education
- demonstrate detrimental effects of disturbance and benefits of restoration
- involve educational and volunteer groups and increase public awareness
