BROWNSVILLE, TX, Feb 28, 2008 – The Gulf of Mexico Foundation held its first meeting of 2008 at the Rancho Viejo Resort in Brownsville, Texas, on Feb 27 and 28. The meeting began on Wednesday afternoon with a visit to one of the GMF's Science & Spanish Club Network projects in the area, the Juliette Garcia Middle School, and toured the club's sable palm pond project. They also visited students in the classroom and learned about experiments they were conducting such as water salinity testing. The evening was devoted to a Meet and Greet reception at the resort. Guests included local business people and representatives from the University of Texas-Brownsville.

On Thursday the Foundation hosted a Business and Industry Roundtable, where members of oil and gas, ports and other industries came together to discuss ways that their employees could get involved as volunteers for Gulf of Mexico Foundation projects. The meeting was followed by a luncheon with guest speaker Robert Cornelison, Director of the Port Isabel-San Benito Navigation District. He spoke about the social challenges faced in the Brownsville area and about its record of environmental progress. He also described the impacts to the area from the expanding offshore oil and gas developments.

Following the GMF Board of Directors’ business meeting held that afternoon, board members and guests enjoyed dinner at Rancho Viejo sponsored by Founding Board Member, Mary Yturria. Although Mrs. Yturria was unable to attend the event, she extended a warm invitation to board members and local business people to enjoy some South Texas hospitality. Dinner speakers were Bill Grimes with the Texas General Land Office and Bill Haines, Harbor Master and Assistant Police Chief in Aransas Pass, Texas. They both spoke on the problem of abandoned vessels and structures along the Texas Coast.
